Throwback Thursday: Southwick AMA 250 National Motocross Start (1986)
Larry Lawrence | January 21, 2016
In this week’s Throwback Thursday photo feature, we go back 30 years to view the start of the one of the motos from the 1986 AMA 250 Motocross National at Southwick, Massachusetts. In this excellent Tom Mueller photo you can see Johnny O’Mara (No. 3) swooping to the inside line ahead of the pack, which also includes Ron Lechien, (No. 2), Joe Wright (No. 63), Jo Jo Keller (No. 16), Rick Johnson (No. 5) and others. Johnson won both motos on his factory Honda at the “Sandbox” to keep him perfect on the season.
Johnson went on to win four of the five AMA 250 Motocross Nationals that season en route to earning the ’86 title over David Bailey and O’Mara.
The Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship will return to the famous Southwick track this summer after a few years away.
