Throwback Thursday: Lance Jones and Jake Zemke Battle on Harley 883s
Larry Lawrence | December 31, 2015
We go back 18 years for this classic Henny Ray Abrams photo showing Lance Jones (28) and Jake Zemke (98) going bar to bar on the final laps of the Progressive Insurance Harley-Davidson Supertwins (883 Sportster class) race at Daytona International Speedway in March of 1997.
Both Jones and Zemke began their careers in flat track racing before branching out and becoming formidable road racers as well. In this 883 race at Daytona it was Jones nipping Zemke at the line to secure the final podium spot.
In this photo you can also just make out the helmet of Dave Estok, who finished in fifth, just behind Jones and Zemke. Estok went on to finish second in the final standings that year behind champ Eric Bostrom and runner-up Zemke. Jones finished the season ranked 10th.
