2015 Yamaha SR400: FIRST LOOK
Andrea Wilson | March 6, 2014
When Yamaha decided to bring back its SR400 for 2015 it wanted to do so with more than just with its name. It wanted to bring it back. As it was. Well, with a few 21st century upgrades.
Thus the SR400 returns for 2015 basically unchanged from the 1970s original. This isn’t just about retro styling. This is old school – with the only upgrade being electronic fuel injection.
Other than that it stays true to its heritage, including its good old-fashioned kick-start engine. Simplicity in design from the ground up, the SR400 has a 399cc air-cooled four-stroke, single-cylinder SOHC two-valve engine, a conventional front fork with twin rear shocks, and spoked wheels with aluminum rims.
The 2015 model retains its classic 3.2-gallon teardrop fuel tank and has an estimated range of 66.2 miles per gallon. The little SR400 has a narrow frame and a seat height of 31 inches. It weighs in at 383 pounds with all its necessary fluids and has a compact wheelbase of 55.5 inches, making what should be a light and agile ride. And for stopping power it has a front disc brake and a 150mm rear drum brake.
Yamaha sees this classic as something that will not only appeal to the entry-level rider, but to real motorcycle purists. It is also a motorcycle that’s meant to be an ideal canvas for customization. It’s up to the designer’s imagination, whether it be a café racer, bobber or scrambler in its final transformation.
The SR400s come standard in dark grey metallic and the MSRP is listed at $5990.
