Chad Reed finished out the High Point weekend with the second moto win, giving the Rockstar Suzuki rider his first-ever 450-class National motocross overall victory with a 1-1 score. The win also gave Reed the lead in the series points standings, now that teammate Mike Alessi is out with a knee injury.
Reed came into the weekend 31 points behind Alessi but his 50-point total for the day moved him to a 19 point advantage in the standings over Alessi with Honda’s Andrew Short another five points back.
Honda’s Ivan Tedesco was the early leader of the second moto, grabbing the holeshot and leading the race until lap 10 when he stalled his bike, allowing Reed to go around. However, Reed also went down, later in the moto, when his front wheel caught a root. Tedesco went down as well when he was unable to avoid the mishap. The incident allowed Short to close on the two riders and take over second, which he held to the end of the race.
Finishing second overall behind Reed was Short with a 2-2 performance. Tedesco rounded out the podium with a solid 3-3, while Suzuki’s Michael Byrne (4-5) and JGR/Yamaha’s Cody Cooper (5-6) rounded out the top five.
JGR/Yamaha’s Josh Grant was one of the fastest riders on the track but suffered a violent crash while running third in the opening moto. He also went down again at the start of the second moto and had to come from last place to finish 11th, giving him a 6-11 for eighth overall.
In the 250 race, Christophe Pourcel took the overall win with a perfect 1-1 score and by doing so, took over the lead in the 250 series standings. It wasn’t easy for the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider, however, as Trey Canard led Pourcel for most of the second moto, but a crash by the GEICO Powersports Honda rider with less than two laps to go, handed Pourcel the lead and an easy road to the final moto victory.
Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey made a tremendous ride in the opening moto, coming from 31st on lap one after a crash to finish third. Dungey inherited second in moto two, when Canard went down, giving Dungey second overall for the day.
Third overall went to KTM’s Tommy Searle with a 4-3 finish.
