Spec tires are coming to MotoGP.
The FIM announced the change to the regulations on the morning of Sunday’s Japanese GP at Motegi.
The decision was made by the Grand Prix Commission “For safety and cost reasons.”
In a statement, the FIM said “The Grand Prix Commission has decided unanimously that there will be a single tyre supplier for the MotoGP class from 2009. Proposals to supply the tyres must be handed to the FIM and Dorna by October 3rd at the latest. The final decision will be announced by the GP Commission by October 18th at the latest.”
With a deadline of next Friday, at the Australian GP, it gives the two likely bidders, Bridgestone and Michelin, very little time to prepare bids. The winner will be announced at the penultimate round of the MotoGP World Championship in Sepang, Malaysia.
